Preetika (a girl that works here) brought up even more artists the day after me and all week the artists have been rehearsing together around Centre. We’ve got throat singers from Tuva, dancers from New York, a lyre-player from Greece and African drummers to name but a few. We are doing dinner for about 100 every night and people are sleeping everywhere- tents, wilderness centre, offices etc. I am sleeping in the new office block and although there are only three in my room (Preetika, Constanza-a Chilean volunteer, and I), there are at least 15 sharing one bathroom and a bucket shower. Unfortunately being a girl as well as having limited strength, I failed to fill the shower even once (it’s a process of fetching water, putting it in the bucket and rigging it up) but Alex ( a good friend who held the position of doctor/barman) would sometimes do it for me!
On paper I’m down as Tanguy’s assistant (artist liaison) and Jimmy’s assistant (food liaison) so I basically do everything! Lots of early mornings, late nights and running backwards and forwards in between. I have never worked so hard in my life. I quickly learnt how to sleep whenever I had a few minutes to spare.
All the artists are fantastic, so talented and so much fun! Every night there are people playing around the camp fire and it’s very strange to hear, for example, African drums, a cello, a greek lyre, a saxophone, and the Tuvan’s random unidentifiable instruments all mixed together.
Sue and Pete Hill made an amazing sculpture of ‘Mother Earth’ out of mud and to add to it, late one evening we all made little animals out of the mud (I made a camel, Kalenge the rhino, and a snail) which were then dried in the sun and hung up on trees around the sculpture.
A film crew from Nairobi have been here all week, I’m sure recording all of the chaos!
