Last night I went with the guys that harvest the honey from the bees. There are hives all over the ranch in the most random, middle of nowhere places! It was absolutely amazing to watch. The men wanted to see if there was enough honey to harvest. First a guy either strips off most of his clothes or rolls them up so there are no gaps for the bees to get in. Then he climbs the tree where the hive is and smokes the bees out with a flaming torch. The hive is sometimes brought down and the comb is taken out and inspected. I was standing a few metres from the base of the tree and I could hear the hum of the bees starting as he woke them up. You can’t see them as it’s dark and they’re attracted to the light so you can’t use your torch. You can feel them all around you anyway, buzzing near your ears. African bees aren’t like the cute, furry ones we have in England, they’re more like aggressive wasps that all attack together! The next few times I watched from the safety of the car!
