Alfie (who’s working on the UN Lelechwa project) and I took a car out to have a quick look around big dam at about 4.30pm. We hardly saw anything so started to head towards another dam, getting stuck in mud along the way. We tried everything to get out, digging, placing wood under the wheels etc but eventually it was too dark. We were going to admit defeat and call for help when we realised that the mobiles had no signal and the radio wasn’t working – we could sometimes receive but not transmit. We hadn’t told anyone where we were going or when we were coming back, it was getting dark, we didn’t have a torch, and there was definitely something huge in the bushes by the side of the road. Neither of us fancied sleeping in the car with no food or water but things were heading in that direction! Four hours later we were rescued by Hillel who had realised something was wrong when we had uncharacteristically not turned up for dinner! We managed to get a broken message through about our rough location and he came and winched us out! We sat on the roof for the last 15 minutes of being stuck and it was a shame that we hadn’t realised sooner how fantastic the stars were that night!
