Dougie and I awoke from night two feeling much revived - we piled a bunch of leaves under our tent to act as cushioning between us and the ground.
Our day began with the sighting of a python wrapped around a tree which was fairly impressive. However I was even more impressed when we sighted a legless lizard later in the day. I believe legless lizards may have been put on Earth as nature's way of having a go at us, because Dougie sure demonstrated some acrobatics when he thought it was a snake! After this ordeal, there was much less of a reaction when we did actually come across a black snake further along the track.
I was interested to know whether any previous hikers had ever come into trouble on the island given the number of potential hazards and the absence of phone reception. I learned from our shuttle bus driver that a man did once require that a leg be amputated after having become trapped under a fallen rock for a couple of days. Otherwise, only minor breaks and abrasions.
Dougie and I made it to Mulligan's Falls with no worries and enjoyed the company of another couple at the campsite before settling in for our last night on the island. I was so pleased to know that it would be our last meal of chicken noodles and tinned stew for..... well, ever!
