The camping grounds and facilities at Cobbold Gorge were a real pleasant surprise. We arrived here yesterday to find that it had an infinity pool that overlooked a dam and the bush beyond. Just up from the pool was the bar and dining area - it was really inviting!
Our guided tour started with a trip in a beefed-up 4WD bus and was followed by a walk through the bush where Gemma, our tour guide, pointed out survival strategies of the aboriginals when they lived off the land. It was actually really interesting. We learned that leaves from the foambark tree, which have a suede-like texture, create a foam when rubbed in the water. This process deoxygenates the water which stuns fish and enabled fish to be caught by the aboriginals. I was also interested to learn that if a native bee was found, the aboriginals would sometimes use sap from a tree to attach a tiny feather to the bee's back so that it was only able to fly low and could be followed to reveal the location of the hive so that the honey could be harvested.
Our guided tour ended with a boat trip through the gorge. It was beautiful and was able to be captured relatively well in photographs that we took. Our boat was powered by an electric motor which meant we virtually cruised in silence and were able to catch an up-close glimpse of a couple of resident crocs. Claude was quite the poser.
When the tour ended, it was up to the bar for a few drinks and an afternoon of lazing about the pool.
