We visited the Undara Lava Tubes today and they did not dissapoint. The lava tubes are tunnels of rock that formed during historical volcanic events. Of the lava that flowed along creeks and depressions, that near the surface cooled quicker than that below. As the surface cooled and hardened, the lava beneath continued to flow leaving behind these large tunnels. The Undara Tubes are the largest of their kind in Austalia.
From the Lava Tube tour, we headed down the road to the Kalkani Crater where we enjoyed a picnic lunch after having created our own works burgers - yummo! We've been feasting on these regularly lately, when on outings.
The Kalkani Crater offered a rim walk however this seemed way too conventional for Dougie and I - we considered it much more entertaining to ride our bikes around the rim! This meant pushing our bikes along the dirt track up to the crater's rim and then pushing a little further across part of the rim however, it made for one hell of a ride from then on! The track was bumpy and really steep. It wasn't necessary for either of us to be scraped from a tree so all went well.
We began travelling to Cobbold Gorge after lunch and arrived on dark. All worn out, we set up camp and re-energized ourselves for a tour of the gorge the following morning.
