Two nights were spent at Cobbold Gorge before travelling to Chillagoe to visit the Chillagoe Caves.
Visits to a few of the caves were by guided tour only however, others exist that were not. We visited both Donna Cave and Royal Arch Cave with a guide. The caves were long with many passages and were of limestone construction. Limestone easily weathers, dissolves and reforms which creates caves with really decorative features. We learnt of stalactites and stalagmites and saw fossils on the cave walls. The Royal Arch Cave was definitely the most impressive.
In the time available between the two guided tours we guided ourselves through the Bautinia Cave and visited Balancing Rock. The self-guided cave was far less extravagant than the previous cave so we chose to not self-explore any others.
From Chillagoe we travelled to Mareeba, pulling up for lunch at a creek crossing along the way. Mareeba is very agricultural and the town appears to have a similar vibe to Goondiwindi. We plan to spend a couple of days in Mareeba updating our resumes so that we may seek work. We would have liked to have spent this time in Cairns however the camping sites were much more expensive there and so Mareeba was considered the better option.
