We were placed on Hinchinbrook Island today in the pouring rain and equipped with a small backpack each which supposedly contained all that we would require to sustain ourselves for the next 4 days as we are to hike 32km along the Thorsborne Trail, to the other end of the island. I was certain we had it all covered however apparently tent poles and forks would have been desirable. Appologies for forgetting the tent poles Dougie! You did really well to erect our tent with a rope and lots of knots though ......good job = )
On the first day of our hike we were fuelled with excitement. We travelled 6.5km from Ramsay Bay to Little Ramsay Bay, passing over sandy beach, through mangroves and open forest, and across rocky headlands, all the while following little orange arrows which marked the trail - these were to become a valuable find. The trail wasn't always obvious and at one point, half an hour was spent looking for an arrow to indicate our path.
Our campsite was in the trees just up from the beach. A sleepless night was had upon mention of the 40 saltwater crocs that inhabit the area by our trusted ferry driver. It didn't help that there was only a layer of tent canvas between the ground and us as a result of our packing lightly which meant the sharing of one sleeping bag between Doug and I. The seclusion and beauty of where we found ourselves far outweighed any discomforts though, such that sleep became a non-necessity.
