Wow, Paronella Park is a historical gem nestled alongside Mena Creek Falls. It was a castle complex built by the Spanish-born Jose Paronella in 1930-1933.
Jose travelled to Aust. in search of wealth so that he may have something to offer Matilda, the lady with whom it was arranged that he shall marry. Jose was a remarkable worker and businessman and created much wealth for himself via the buying and selling of agricultural properties within the region. Upon his eventual return to Spain 10 years later, Jose discovered that Matilda had in fact married another man - something he hadn't anticipated despite him neglecting to make contact throughout his entire absence. Instead, Jose married Matilda's younger sister, Margarita, and it became Jose and Margarita that created Paronella Park.
It was always intended that the park be created for the use and enjoyment of the public rather than a home for themselves.
Jose (a baker by trade) and two men built the park with their own hands whilst Margarita ran the ice creamery and was responsible for management of the park and any functions.
The park was powered via the use of hydroelectricity and still is today. It was the first power generator of its kind in North QLD, at a time when homes were lit using candlelight.
The park featured two castles and beautiful tropical gardens and well manicured lawns. In addition, the park featured a ballroom which made it the entertainment hub hosting theatre shows, cinema, dances and weddings.
The park has been beaten about by fire, floods and cyclones however the beautiful gardens still remain as do remnants of the two castles and the ballroom.
A great place and well worth a visit!
