In shocking news, I may have had an allergic reaction on Thursday from all the yogurt I've been eating, haha. In better news, I did eat out this weekend (yay!) and I had "lemon pudding" which was lemon sponge cake with hard lemon curd on top and warm custard. It was delicious. I also had yummy pub chili for dinner and all of that didn't cost me very much. Yay for budgeting.
And since nothing else really matters, I will begin to regal my account of the most amazing place I've ever been, Gloucester Cathedral.
So I get to the train station an hour early just incase something happens, which of course it did. I couldn't retrieve my ticket because I don't have a pin chip in my credit card. No worries because I got to the platform with 20 minutes to spare.
I drifted in and out of sleep on my way to Birmingham station to transfer trains. On the whole, the trip took about 2 hours. I was amazed at how green everything was and how far I could see the hills rise in the distance. As I listened to "Party in the USA" on my ipod, I knew I was definitely NOT in the USA.
I stepped off the train in Gloucester with absolutely no idea where to go. Exciting. I made my way toward the center of town and there it was, I could see the Cathedral in the distance. I immediately got my camera out and smiled. It was crazily misplaced and absolutely gorgeous from where I was. It only got better as I practically raced up the path in the direction the signs told me to go. There it was. It was amazing. I just had to stand there and look at it for a minute.
I walked in and for the first few moments, I couldn't figure out what to do first. I started talking to the little old welcome lady and then I cried. I think I scared her, haha. I was just really overwhelmed. This was by far the oldest and coolest thing I'd ever seen and I definitely wasn't in the States.
I went around and asked some of the guides some questions. Found out some history because I went up into the tower for a tour that ended up being a private tour. How awesome is that!? Right before me, there was a group of little kids in the tower but I got both guides, John and John, to myself for an hour to answer any questions I had and we could take as long as we wanted. They told me all the little stories you can't tell a big group because it takes too long to move them around.
So I learned all these crazy facts about the building and the people who inhabited it. It was surreal. After the tour, I decided to explore the Cathedral more. I made my way through the corridors where Harry Potter was filmed (OH MY GOD) and out into the garden. It was gorgeous. The whole place was gorgeous.
After about 3 hours, I finally left and explored the town. I made my way down to the National Waterway Museum and learned all about the canal system that make transportation of materials so much easier for the people in Gloucester. I got to go on some old victorian boat homes and then I decided it was time to eat. Cue the awesome pub with cheap food and a view of the water. I also decided that dessert and tea were in order so I walked back to the center of town and found a cozy little restaurant where I had the lemon pudding.
Overall the trip was awesome and cemented the fact that I think this country is beautiful.
Please enjoy these pictures. Some of the first ones are in Leicester, where I'm living.
