As I write this, I'm sitting in my room, warming it by desk lamp, and eating partially cooked instant noodles. This sounds depressing but it's not bad at all... let me start from Chicago:
On my way, I slept. It wasn't bad. But then CHICAGO AIRPORT IS AMAZING!!!! I wanted to use WiFi but it costs money and we all know how cheap I am...
So my flight to London started with a soda and a chit chat with Mike, a 55 year-old Iranian American with a son and a wife back in San Diego. Mike is on a 2 month trip to see family and enjoy his early retirement. 35 years before this, Mike studied abroad from Iran to Sweden. He then came to the U.S. and became a citizen. Needless to say, his stories were interesting and we talked about some amazing things.
After that, I tried to sleep on and off for the next 3 hours then breakfast time. I landed in London at 8:35am (3:35am New York Time) and was unsure of which terminal my pick up was in. After 3 trips to the information desk, we found out I needed to be in terminal 3 as opposed to 1. I quickly made my way there, sliding almost uncontrollably down the ramps because of the weight of my luggage. I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous I must have looked pushing that (or being pulled by) my trolley.
After 20mins, I arrived and was greeted by two lovely DMU student ambassadors who led me to a sitting area. A half hour later, a bus took me and the other international students to DMU where we sat and waited to be escorted to our halls. My RA took me around and the first thing I did was buy internet connection. Expensive but necessary.
So dinner was an hour later where the drink options were limited to red/white wine or orange juice. Dinner was tons of sandwiches and finger foods from different countries. I felt full but definitely was not. I sat with some kids from Germany and Cyprus and we talked politics and customs. Very interesting. I reconnected with one of the student ambassadors and told him that I basically have his job in the states. Word spread and we decided to hit a pub on the way out. I already forget the name of the pub (don't worry, I'm not drunk) but I hung out for a bit before coming back to my room.
My room was freezing when I got back and then I realized all the windows in the hall were open. I've closed them but it's still really cold. Time to make my bed and save unpacking for tomorrow. Now I'm depressed because my room smells like noodles and i can't open the window because I'm too cold, haha.
P.S. It hasn't rained here in 11 days!
Good night :)
