On Friday morning I went to explore Oxford street & spent a good hour or so in Selfridges marveling at things like the giant Candy section with many, MANY giant tubes of Jelly Belly jelly beans in every flavour imaginable. I bought a few little things (on a budget, you see :P) & got one of the bright yellow Selfridges bags for my precious purchases. I stopped by the hostel around lunch time to drop a few things off & power nap it up before meeting Kel in Covent Garden in the arvo.
We spent time wandering around the lovely area, watching street performers & poking our noses into cute, kitschy stores in the main square. We managed to amuse ourselves for quite some time in a toy section playing with the likes of little wind up toys…like I said, there are always lots of giggles involved when Kelly & I are together! :P
We retired to the pub mid-afternoon to gossip the afternoon away…now there are a LOT of pubs to choose from in London & they all seem to have the same MO: black window awnings, gold lettering, brightly colour flower boxes under the windows, & strange names. This particular pub was named the Nag's Head. We found a nice cozy corner in which to have a glass of wine & discuss all manner of worldly things (some more worldly than others). While we were there Kelly got a very exciting call indeed; the owner of the hostel in Nice where she was burned called to say that they had agreed to compensate her & that it would all be taken care of by their insurance company. She said he was lovely about the whole thing on the phone & very apologetic. He even told her that after she'd left the hostel they'd had all the boilers replaced & a plumber had adjusted the temperature of the hot water so that nobody else would be hurt like she was. Kelly was overjoyed & we had more wine to celebrate!
When Kel's boyfriend, Eddie, finished work for the day, we met him outside Covent Garden station & were quickly sucked in by promotional people on the street handing out flyers for cheap food & cocktails at a Mexican restaurant nearby. It was actually a really good deal - we got a couple of huge mixed plates of food to share between the three of us & a jug of Long Island Ice Tea, & continued with the celebrations! Eventually we got kicked out because the restaurant were hosting some sort of party for a sports team or something that night so anyone who wasn't a part of that had to leave, so we made our way to a bar that Juls had recommended to me earlier in the week.
You would probably never find this bar if you didn't know it existed, because it's actually underground, right in the middle of the street, where one of the old underground toilets used to be. Yes, I know, that sounds a little…uh…gross haha But it's actually been totally renovated & revamped into this gorgeous, tiny little burlesque-style cocktail bar. And wow, were the cocktails good! They even had a lady singing in the corner with a guy playing piano…very cool! It's called The Cellar Door - if you're ever in London, pay it a visit…if you can find it! ;)
After our cocktails at the Cellar Door we went out dancing for a while at a club nearby but despite my afternoon power nap I was flagging fast & eventually bailed to take a taxi home. The poor taxi driver had to listen to me uncontrollably hiccupping the whole way home…actually I suspect he found that kinda funny…
