Last weekend we both went to see the Socceroo's play against Uruguay with Guilherme and Laura. It was a good day especially for us lads as we have missed our Saturday matchdays! The game was played at the Telstra Stadium, which has a capacity of 83,500 and was very impressive, it is Sydneys main stadium and was the centre piece for the Olympics in 2000. Before the game we soaked up the atmosphere and there was about ten Uruguay fans singing in Spanish. Gui and Laura had an idea what they were singing and it was something like "you kangaroo son of a b****" - Nice guys!! One song that did make us laugh was the Aussie chant of U-R-GAY! U-R-GAY! The game itself was good to watch even though most of Australia's Premiership based players like Schwarzer, Viduka, Cahill and Kewell weren't playing. Uruguay had a very strong squad and it was good to watch the likes of Recoba play. Brad Jones, Boro's second choice goalkeeper made his international debut in goal and made a massive impression...but for the wrong reasons. He came out for a cross and fumbled and dropped the ball into the path of Recoba who had an open goal at his mercy to make it 2-1, and incidentially lost Australia the game. The atmosphere in the stadium was very different to the premiership and the songs alot more cheesy. The attendance was 61,000, which was a bigger turn out than we anticipated and the main songs were "ole...ole...ole...ole...Aussie...Aussie" and "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi." One thing that we did love about the game was being allowed to take your beer into the stands opposed to downing them in the fifteen minute half time break in England.
