Before we left Byron Bay we took a visit to the famous Byron Bay lighthouse. Apart from looking amazing the lookout point close to the lighthouse is the most easterly point of mainland Australia, which is quite fitting considering we are travelling the east coast! The drive to Coffs has to be my worst yet...I did not enjoy it at all! The sun and heat was intense and every five minutes we had to slow down while the Pacific Highway cut straight through a small one horse town. While we travelled through Queensland we saw no more than 3 speed cameras but in one 2 hour journey we saw at least 8 of them and even though I don't speed it is still very annoying! Anyway...whinge over!
We were only going to stay one night in Coffs Harbour as we didn't think there was much to do, but we ended up enjoyng three days here. The Pet Porpoise Pool is a miniture sea world with Dolphin and seal shows and it claims to be the most interactive animal water park in the world. To be fair I wouldn't put it past them. We got dolphin and seal kisses (no tongues) and got to hand feed the baby penguins, on top of being able to touch the dolphins as they swam and played in the pool. The shows were fantastic and it just amazes me how clever these animals are and how clever the trainers must be! We got hand clapping, yoga lessons, walking on a barrel and even skateboarding from the seals and alot of high jumps and ball balancing on top of other things from the dolphins. The best thing about this place is that its not too commercial and like the Billabong Sanctuary up in Townsville the whole day seems catered around you and its a much more personal experience.
Coffs Harbour is famous for growing its bananas and everywhere you go its banana mad. It was no suprise that we came across The Big Banana, which is a small theme park with a few rides and a gift shop that is full of anything you can stick a banana on! We had a go of the Tobogan ride which was pretty fun but it wasn't long till we were back on the highway heading for Port Macquarie.
