Hello all ….
We're nearly there now. Another sunny, happy, smiling, photo-taking day today at the Olympic Park. I don't think there was anything new though that you haven't heard before. And seeing that this is my next-to-last blog, I thought I'd do some reflecting back on this amazing journey that's about to come to an end.
I first saw something in the paper about volunteers being needed at the Games back in 2010. I remember saying to my wife Sue "Hey, look at this. They're looking for volunteers. I'll stick my name down for that". All I wanted was to have some role, some job, anything in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Didn't care what it was. I'd have done anything. I had my eye on wearing a hi-vis jacket and being a car park attendant.
The rest as they say is history. The selection process slowly meandered along. Then the training got going back in the winter. Then it all actually happened. Two weeks ago, I was in the Olympic Park for the Opening Ceremony. And tomorrow I'll be there for the Closing Ceremony. Not wearing a hi-vis jacket. But the uniform of a London 2012 Games Maker. My chest swells with pride every time I think about that.
I was incredibly lucky to be picked. And so proud to be given this amazing opportunity. I find it difficult to find the words that will fully put over what the past two weeks have meant to me. I don't think anything I've done in my life up to now has been quite like it. It truly has been awesome. It's been an honour and a privilege to be there. It really has. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I must say thanks to my wife Sue again for always being right behind me in what has been nothing short of sheer self-indulgence.
I've kept absolutely everything as a souvenir. I've got fantastic memories. I've met lots of interesting, happy people. And I've been able to spend hours just wandering around the Olympic Park soaking up the incredible atmosphere. You've heard about some of the other people in Team Anna in my blogs. The other day, one of them asked me "Why do you keep walking around doing things? Why don't you just take it easy?". The answer's very simple. When I completed the application back in 2010, I REALLY wanted to be picked. And when I was, I was determined to give it my all. I totally believed what we were told in the training - that Games Makers would be the difference between a good Games and a great Games. I wanted London 2012 to be a great Games and I wanted to help make that difference. I wanted to make sure people from all over the world enjoyed every single minute of their time at London 2012. I wanted everyone everywhere to think that the whole country did an amazing job. Did we do it? I'd like to think so. The news that I've read seems pretty favourable. A lady getting off the train this morning looked at me and said "You've all done brilliantly". I really really hope everyone thinks the same way.
But we're not quite there yet. One more day to go ….. mustn't let up now we're so close. I'll be back in touch with the final blog tomorrow Ken
PS No time to upload and sort all the photos and videos. I'll do that as quickly as I can
