…. to getting a blog from me tonight talking about my throat. Specifically the infection therein. You know what it's like when you feel something coming on? That was me yesterday morning. Started to feel a tickle in my throat. Worse by the afternoon. And even more so by the time I got home [called into Tesco on the way to stock up with Strepsils]. But they didn't do that much good. Really painful to swallow when I got up this morning. In view of the boring day yesterday, did it cross my mind that I could stay home and feel sorry for myself? Well I've got to be honest and say yes it did. But only fleetingly. Only another three days left after today so of course I had to be there. And boy was I glad I was ….
The crowds were back. The sun was shining. The sky was blue. Had my tea, went for a stroll and took loads of photos for people as usual. In for the briefing. No Anna so her boss Elyssia took it. But there were only three of us there again and she said to expect a quiet day. And that's the way the morning started. Chris, Ibrahim and me were working together at the coach park and around 1pm went back to the hospitality centre for lunch. It's not actually in the hospitality centre itself but a staff canteen round the back [out of sight]. But the food there is much better than the industrial-size workforce eating area which I think most other people have to use.
Anyway, we hung around there for a while after eating and it's a good job we did. Some PR person came over from the BA hospitality suite and asked for help in getting Chris Hoy and his wife into the reception they were having. Security is very tight and he didn't have the right accreditation - I think it was all a bit last minute. Luckily Anna and Elyssia were there and worked out a cunning plan. They ignored Traffic Supervisor Terry's helpful suggestion "Get him to **** ing cycle here". So we ended up delivering them on a bendy-bus. Not a word of a lie …. that's how we got them there. Once they'd worked out their plan, Elyssia jumped on the bendy- bus and went off to find him.
The radios there are open and all messages can be heard. They couldn't say "We're flouting the rules and have sent a bendy-bus to get Sir Chris Hoy". So there was a rather weird radio conversation between Elyssia [Transport 1] and Anna [Transport 2]. I thought back to all the books I'd read about the French resistance in WWII.;
TRANSPORT 2 Transport 1. Have you arrived at your location? Is the package there?TRANSPORT 1 Both package are here. We're just leaving and will deliver them to you in 10 minutes
In that ten minutes, we found other people and had a Games Maker guard of honour ready when the packages - sorry, Sir Chris Hoy and his wife - arrived. We clapped said well done etc and then he was hijacked by BA staff. Didn't see him again after that.
But someone we did see was gymnast Louis Smith. He came out of the BA suite a bit later [see, I said they get the best] on his scooter with a few people around him. One of them was a journalist who wanted to tape an interview. But there was quite a bit of noise so he said "I wondered if I could do it just sitting in one of you buses?". Terry grinned straightaway. "Of course you can. I'll open the doors for you. By the way, don't suppose you've got any pins on you ….?". I'm going to miss Terry ....
So there you are, highs and lows. Ups and downs. I'm starting to think we've turned the corner and the next three days are going to be amazing. Dear dear, what did I say? Yes, ONLY THREE MORE DAYS!!!! What on earth am I going to do on Monday? Maybe travel to Stratford, go up and press my nose against the locked gate and sigh "I used to work here once"
Hey ho …….. see you tomorrow x
