…. was to wear a thermal vest when I left home at 530am this morning. Decidedly chilly and the weather forecast wasn't good. It certainly paid off this morning although I was sweating like a pig this afternoon when the sun broke through. My days at the Olympic Park in Team Anna have developed some sort of loose-ish shape. I arrive around 745am when everyone's pouring in there. I wander around for an hour or so frequently taking photos of families together. Then around 9am I go and check in and get my meal ticket [and a poncho today because of the rain]. Then it's time for a cup of tea and I just hang around until somebody shows up. Another cup of tea, bit of a chat, bit of telly and at some point Anna comes in and we have the morning briefing …… nothing at all heavy so far. And then we set off to face the world. Before I leave the briefing though, I need to update you on the rap I mentioned yesterday. When the time came I said to Anna "We've got something for you". Unfortunately only one of the two Akquils was there and he suddenly got stage fright when everyone starting staring at him. No amount of encouragement {"Go on mate. You can do it"] or ridicule and humiliation ["You're pathetic"] could get him to move and the show was nearly cancelled before its first performance. Luckily Francesca saw her opportunity and seized it. "Give it to me" she instructed and off she went. To a round of applause at the end. She's been croaking for a couple of days but I told her I thought that give the rap more identity and depth and she accepted it [just hope she doesn't ask me what I meant]. Anna was tickled and thought I should try to add a verse a day. And definitely a chorus. Then we can all do it together at the end. I nodded yes but was thinking no. Bitter experience over the years has taught me the importance of getting out while you're ahead. Whatever happens I had to be honest with Akquil and tell him he's history now and I've moved on to Francesca. Tough I know but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
The entertainment today was about toilets. You need to know the layout. The hospitality centre looks out onto the Olympic stadium. At the back is an entire army of lesser folk like us. There's also a parking area, some bendy-busses. And a hospitality toilet. [I think they've all got inside toilets - this is a sort of overflow if you'll excuse the pun]. Toilets for the riff-raff are 100m away over a road. It goes without saying that the hospitality centre toilets are STRICTLY out of bounds for us. It was raining this morning and we were just standing around chatting. Suddenly a car pulled in and stopped. A posh looking man got out. Went to the hospitality toilet. Returned. Got back in his car. And drove off.
At this point, let me introduce Terry. Great bloke. Born in the East End. Traffic Supervisor and a Londoner through and through [a natural for EastEnders if you want my opinion]. What follows has been censored …..
"Look at that ----er. What the ---ing hell does that ---- think he's doing? I've been wanting a ---- for ages but was waiting for the ----ing rain to stop. ---- that".
And with that, he jumped into a bendy-bus, drove it to the toilets 100m over the road, left it outside, went in and had a ----, came out and drove it back. He jumped out with a big grin on his face "That's ----ing better!". I love Terry - great bloke.
He was in such a good mood that he let me have a little go at driving one of the bendy-buses. Only a short way but I think it went pretty well. Couple of near misses but I didn't kill anyone which is a bit of a result. All lies …… of course he didn't. But he did let me sit in the drivers seat with the engine running which is the closest I'll ever get. I have got a photo of that but promised Terry I would keep it to myself until the end of the Olympics.
Anything else I can tell you? Had a radio and clipboard all day but must admit the novelty's worn off on that one now and I'm getting a bit blasé about it. Oh yes, this was funny. At the meeting this morning, Anna said "I've got a couple of "Team Leader" armbands. Does anyone fancy being a team leader? Someone - let's call her Wendy - instantly sat bolt upright. "I'll do it" she drooled. And she was awarded a coveted Team Leader armband. [The other one went to William. Well he calls himself William but he's a youngish Chinese guy who works for BAA. He's an amusing person. Just seems to float around fairly aimlessly, smile a lot and not do much. Not knocking it at all - worked well for me for years. [There's two or three former bosses of mine getting this who might recognise it].
But back to Wendy. This could turn out funny and I expect great things in the days ahead. For example Tom - a retired nuclear power engineer from Suffolk - whispered in my ear [again censored] "----- ----- . She'll have us all jumping up and down on the ---- ing spot". Tom spoke for many - after the sharp intakes of breath, there was a long silence. All of you might have come across someone like Wendy. Someone who just HAS to be involved in anything and everything. Someone who has got antennae that pick up any incident of any sort within a 500m radius and who then makes a beeline for it. Only for the antennae to start twitching again and she scuttles off somewhere else. Whatever it is, wherever it is - Wendy's there. And now she's got a Team Leader armband, I fear there'll be no stopping her. I'm going to keep a close eye on Wendy. And on Tom …….. just in case he does anything he'll regret afterwards. [Hi-jack a bendy-bus and go looking for Wendy perhaps?].
In fairness, I have to tell you that I counted six pins on a beaming Wendy this afternoon. So whatever she's doing seems to work for her. Nothing works for me - I still haven't got any. In case you're wondering, Dean's got two now.
Exciting stuff eh? Nothing tomorrow I'm afraid - I'VE GOT A DAY OFF!!!! Back on Thursday. Take care. Ken
