你好,
I cannot believe we are halfway through December! And we are now 1/3 of the way through our time in China :D
Since I have turned 18, Lucie and I have noticed that we seem to get invited to more places, and we're beginning to wonder if it is the age thing. The first weekend in December we went strawberry and orange picking with some of the English teachers of Senior 2. Yes! Strawberry picking! In December!! We ended up going home with 2 carrier bags full of strawberries, and one full of oranges.
In between the fruit picking, Lucie and I were allowed to try and drive some of the teacher's electric bikes (e-bikes) - these are the most popular form of transport here. They were actually pretty simple to work, and not too difficult to drive (though I did fall off the first time I tried to go around a corner, and I still have an impressive bruise :P). After the fruit picking we were invited back to one of the teacher's houses to make and have dinner. We were first taught how to play Mah Jiang by Mrs Huang, Mrs Deng and two of the other teachers. This is not Mahjong - it's more complicated - sort of like Rummikub with quite a few extra rules. Then Lucie made dumplings with some of the teachers, and I helped to make a fish soup - basically fish, oil, water, ginger and spring onions. The food was delicious, and Lucie and I had a really good day.
Last Friday we were invited (at 4.45pm) to join members of some committee in Yihuang for dinner in the school at 5.30pm. Rushing home and back to the school we sat and enjoyed the dinner whilst 99% of the conversation completely passed over us. Though we did exchange a few pleasantries with the man who seemed to be the chairman of the committee (via Sophia, who once again was acting as translator). Sophia then invited us to spend Saturday evening with her and her family at their new flat to have hotpot for dinner.
Just as we were walking to Sophia's on Saturday when Lucie got a phone call. It was Sophia telling us that Mr Luo had invited us to have dinner with him and a group of teachers, which was being paid for my the top Senior 3 student's family. That was a very merry dinner, with lots of Ganbei-ing - I made sure to avoid the rice wine, and just stuck to beer!
We've made our plans and have our tickets for our Christmas travelling, now just need to find time this week to pack and also find presents for Ivy and Sophia.
Until next time,
再见 x
P.S. If I don't get a chance to blog until after our holidays, Merry Christmas!
