你好,
Today has been an interesting day.
During the week Sophia invited us to lunch today to celebrate her family moving in to a new apartment. We of course accepted.
We bought a box of chocolates (thought is was a safe option as not sure on the gift customs in China) and made our way to the restaurant that Sophia had told us about for 12noon.
We arrived and found ourselves sat at a table with nobody we knew, but we smiled and accepted the toasts made to us - turning down baiju and opting for beer (definitely a wise decision!). The food was lovely and we couldn't believe that Sophia and her husband had managed to invite just under 100 family members to this lunch!
Just as we were deciding to say thank you and leave (about half of the guests had left at this point so we knew it would not be rude), Sophia came over to our table and invited us to spend the afternoon with her at her flat.
The flat was absolutely lovely - beautiful tiled walls and simple but classy decorations. We were there with about 30 of the guests from the lunch. (We did feel a little awkward as we were pretty sure we were the only ones there who weren't family). Some of the men were playing cards and Sophia got us to watch and try and learn how to play. This was unsuccessful, but it was quite interesting to watch. They seemed to be playing with at least two packs of cards and were throwing down groups of 4 or 5 cards.
Sophia then asked us if we would like to stay for dinner. We were sat at the main table with Sophia and mostly men. We managed to decline every attempt they made at trying to get us to drink baiju, and stuck to beer - though the few bottles we had drank there and a couple in the flat meant we were not completely unaffected!
We had a lovely afternoon, and didn't leave Sophia's until 7pm. If that's a moving in party, I can't imagine what other events are like!!
Until tomorrow,
再见 x
