We arrived at the airport after a fairly smooth journey and getting to know each other at the holiday inn bar the evening before. We were met by Laszlo, a nice man who reminded me a little of my uncle. We had a walk around Cluj, the airport city. It was big with a beautiful church and a certain quirkiness to it with second hand books stacked up on tables, niche shops and cool grafitti on the walls. We grabbed a sandwich with a filling of our choice and I managed to spill the orange juice everywhere and get it over everyone!
We started out on our 3.5 hour journey to Odorheiu where we stayed for the first 10 days of the journey. As we travelled along there were mountains in the distance and a mixture of mansions (some half finished) and shacks in the villages, all in colours of bright orange, peach and red. Groups of elderly residents sat outside their houses on benches, dressed in black. There were rows of colourful bee hives, chickens and farmland at every property. We passed several people riding horse and carts.
On arrival we realised we were staying in a very nice pension house. I was sharing with Stef. There was a big garden at the front with a smashed up car and place to have a bonfire.
We had a meal in a traditional mean in a restaurant called Select. It was strange to go into a restaurant where people were smoking. There was a soup to start with a big chunk of meat in the bottom (michael's vegetarian option wasn't quite so vegetarian!) then we had pork schnitzel covered in cheese, pickle on the side and chips. We also tried a local speciality - schnapps!
Later on we visited a local bar that was partaking in the town's music festival. There were awesome singers playing jazz including there version of higher ground! I tried some lemon vodka, very good!
