This morning I was in a deep sleep and woke up with a start as Stef gently nudged me awake. I'm happy here and enjoying the company of fun and interesting people.
Today we travelled towards the gorge and stopped off at the town hall so that Laszlo could sort some paperwork out. We carried onto a local primary school where he was giving a talk about conservation and wildlife to the children. We sat at the back with the teachers and watched as they all piled into the classrooms to sit on tiny chairs pointing towards a creen Laszlo had set up. We didn't understand what was being said but there were several interesting photographs met with a variety of exclamations from the children. "Ews" when the toads appeared on screen.
On the way back to Odorheiu we stopped off to have lunch and bird watch at St. Pauls lakes. I've never seen a reserve with such a variety of rich wildlife. There were incredibly noisy toads everywhere (though it was hard to see them) they were blowing out their cheeks like bubblegum as they croaked.
Birds we saw were as follows-
- Buzzard
- Marsh Harrier
- Lesser spotted eagle
- Honey buzzard
- Osprey
- Lapwing
- Oyster Catcher
- Stonechat
- Reed Warbler
- Yellow wagtail
- We heard a cuckoo and a Bittern
Laszlo showed us an ant's nest. When he disturbed it with his hand we could smell sulphuric acid, it was quite something!
Back in the town we stopped off for some BBQ supplies as we were to have one on the fire in the garden tonight. We made kebab sticks with vegetables and lit the fire. Later we found a grate in the shelter which would be used to throw all the food on. Laszlo's other colleague had a very energetic dog that enjoyed being chased by Michael (see photo)
He also had an inquisitive son whom we taught the delights of marshmallows melted by the fire.
Later Michael and Simon visited an Irish gig and had a whale of a time dancing and entertaining the locals. They came back home with Irish accents.
