Today we set off to Bran castle, built by saxons in 1382 to defend against the Turks. From 1920 queen Marie lived there and a lot of the beautiful contents still there now, she imported from western Europe.
It felt like the kind of castle I could live in with airy rooms, secret passages, tunnels and views over the mountains and forests. We went back down to the bottom and grabbed a bite to eat. I had a savoury cheese roll and a chocolate/apple eclair type thing.
We walked around some old buildings that had been transported there to make a museum. They represented village life back in the day. We felt we had to look around the tacky vampire gift stalls but and we did find a nice stall selling traditional Romanian plates and bowls. The name is Horezu ceramics, made in Horezu city on the riverbed of the river Olt.
On our way home Michael requested that we stopped to have a look in the Saxon church which was a good idea. We asked a local if we could go inside and two young boys had the keys and took us into the ancient building with a cold damp feeling. After adventuring up a couple of old, crooked staircases we reached the spectacular bell tower.
With trepidation we climbed to the very top to be met with incredible views over the valley. I sat for a while and looked out of the stone slit for a window whilst the boys chatted in Romanian.
Tonight we all hung out at our place and they guys demonstrated an unusual welly boot dance we'd missed at the dance festival which was hilarious.
