My last few days in Ushuaia and the big plan is in action: today Jose will work until 2pm then his friend Lorena will come around and get us in her car and drive out to the Tiera del Fuego National Park. In the park we will do a couple of short hikes and then head back to the city where tonight we will all go to a leaving party/Argentinian BBQ. In the morning I met Martin at a hiking store in town where they had this really good deal on hiking shoes; if you buy two pairs the third is free meaning we would only have to pay $20 each a pair. Unfortunately on arrival I found out they didn't have my size. At around 2pm Jose finished work and his friend Lorena came around to pick us up to take us out to the National Park. The park was very close to town and only took us about 30 minutes in the car. We had a look around the visitors centre and the old train station which occupied the building at the start of the trek. When it came to having to pay our entrance fee Lorena told the ticket lady we were all locals and after a strange look they signaled us through - locals only pay $1 compared to locals having to pay $11. First stop was a little office on a jetty that was the departure point for boat trips to the only island in the park. There was a little old man that manned the office and was the self-proclaimed president of the island municipality; we had a good chat with him, drank Yerba mate and stayed out of the cold weather. When its cold and your with friends Yerba mate is so good; its warming, tasty and gives a small energy boost. Next stop was a 10 minute drive down the road to a resteraunt and museum that overlooked probably the nicest part of the river. We wondered around the museum and Lorena explained Ushuaias history as a prison settlement. We then jumped back in the car and visited the green lake, the black lake and 2 or 3 other small sites in the park. The weather got incredibly cold just as we were at the past stop and I got the all too familiar chill to the bone that stuck with me for the next two hours. When we arrived back to the city the rain had started but we wanted to go see the huge cruise ship in the port disembark. It was around 9pm when we got back and we had an hour before Ruben - Jose's friend would come and collect us to take us out to the party. The party was just a small gathering but was in an incredibly wealthy part of the city; the girl who was having the leaving party's Father was the president of Mercedes Benz here in Ushuaia. The room where the gathering was, was a huge games room complete with kitchen, BBQ and toilets - the size of a small house. There was only about 8-9 people there but it was nice, the girls were making homemade pizzas and we started on the red wine. A few people could speak English which was handy for me and I had some really interesting chats with the girls that were leaving. I then met this girl from Buenos Aires who had been living in Australia and had just come back from a visit to Asia. After a few bottles of red wine we started on the gun and tonic and that went straight to my head so I went back to the wine. A couple of the girls play guitar and song so halfway through the night the guitar was brought out and we were treated to some music. I am not exactly sure when we made it back to the house but it was late.
