After a lot of rain in the night I was expecting to wake-up to horrible weather but surprisingly the sun was out. My plan was to walk up to the nearby glacier today a moderate 4 hour walk from town. As the weather was so nice I decided to head up there straight away in my shorts and shirt (bad idea). After weaving my way through the streets for a few hours I came to the start of the uphill accent to the ski centre and Chair lift. The walk was beautiful with the huge snow covered mountains and glaciers in front of me and behind the view of Ushuaia and the beagle channel. The walk wasn't to difficult and in just over an hour I made it to the centre. From here I could either take the very expensive chair lift or walk the steep uphill section 1km, Ofcourse I chose to walk - not before chucking on my jumper and beanie. This is where it became apparent that walking up here in shorts and shirt was not the most intelligent idea - there was a freezing cold wind coming off the mountain and I had already lost feeling in my fingers. The last km was steep and testing and now I was battling the cold aswell I eventually made it only to find I still had to continue another km to the best view points. I had no choice to stop as I was freezing to death and when I went to get my camera out I realized I literally could no longer operate my fingers. So taking photos became quite a challenge and after a couple of photos I tried to take in the beautiful scenery but unfortunately the cold was getting to me so I started my trek down. To be honest after just being in the Torres del Paine it shames me to say that this Glacier was marvelously unspectacular in comparison. On the way down I crossed 100s of tourists all making there way up to the viewpoint to make the most of the clear sky's (a rare occurrence here). The walk down was steep and as I was so cold I could feel me knees giving out so I tried to slow my pace but trying to get warm got the better of me and I rocketed down to the car park and then started the hour hike down the road. On the way down I crossed many more backpackers making the trek up the road rather then pay the steep taxi fares. I walked alongside this crazy old guy who was pushing and jogging down the hill with his wife in her wheelchair - quite a sight to see specially seen as he was about 70 years old and had the old girl up on her back wheels. After an hour and a bit I was back at the house and straight into some hot Herba Mate to try get some warmth back into my body. In the afternoon I went for a bit more of a look around the city and found this really cool health store that sold some really interesting things. In the evening I had the plan to cut my hair as it is getting very long and scruffy looking - I found some clippers and went for it and you guessed it made an absolute mess of my hair. My hair was incredibly short and uneven on the sides, not cut at the back and up top was a mess- s*** what to do??? Maybe tommorow I can find a hairdresser or ask Jose if he could try cutting it better for me. The plan for Friday is to go camping with some of Jose's friends and some other Couchsurfers About an hour out of the city I just have to find a sleeping bag which hopefully I can do tomorrow.
