Day 26
A fun but not very eventful day, my last full day of the trip. Sat around most of the day, I was waiting for someone to do something but apparently we were just waiting for Bonnie to come home. When she got here though (like 4) she took Josh and me to the beach (the last thing on my Alaska check-list)! So us three and the three dogs crammed into Bonnie's car and we went down to the coastal trail (I was wearing my swim trunks, shirt, and a jacket (because it is Alaska)). The tide was low so there was a whole lot of beach but I climbed down the rocks after taking off my shirt and shoes and started walking... turns out Alaska (beach) is the consistency of water-based clay (I think it might have been actually). Anyway really slippery and fine. What a hike! I had to zig-zag back and forth to keep out of the mud that was a consistency of quick sand (btw there was a sign at the path that said "Warning: mud flats and water"). There were big ravines carved into the clay by small streams that were usually 6+ feet deep so I had to slide down the side and shimmy up the other side it was really quite hard. Anyway I kept walking, ran a little bit (really hard when sometimes the mud came halfway up my calves) and the water didn't seen to be getting any closer. The actual water ended up to be about half a mile away from the paved trail, there just wasn't anything to guage distance with. So I got to the water and just enjoyed the view of the bay for a while it was absolutely beautiful. Decided to get down to business though and took a few big steps into the water and then dove headfirst, it felt like diving into a wall and I had to resist the urge to gasp. Turned around and ran back to the shore, I was so cold I just decided to keep running so I could stay warm and in my hurry I slipped down one of the ravines o my butt (as opposed to my hands and feet like I had been) and got that nasty gray clay all over the back of my white swim trunks and onto my lower back. I finally ran out of energy and was still panting from the shock of the water so I just stumbled back to the path and tried to wash my hands off at the little brook next to the path, didn't really work that well so I ended up using my only towel to clean my hands face and feet (luckily it was my last day). So we walked on the trail for a while to give the dogs some excercise and dry me off, oh nows a good time to say the battery for my camera died and I can't find my back up battery or charger so the only pics of the whole thing are on Josh's phone grrrr... Anyway me walking down the path in nothing but swim trunks covered in mud must have looked pretty strange seeing that everyone else around was in long pants and jackets, a lot of people stared it was funny. But I was warm compared to the water until I got used to that temp and realized my boxer's were still retaining water.... and therefore I was actually freezing. Changed back into my jeans after all the clay had dried and we went home, where I took a nice hot shower. The clay turned out to almost dye my skin and was really hard to get off. But in the end, I swam in the Gulf of Alaska!!
