Day 22
Today was really nifty. We woke up early to drive to Wittier where we took a glacier cruise! The drive was a lot shorter than we expected and one part of it was through a one lane tunnel that is about 2 miles long through a mountain. It is used by trains and cars and so there are scheduled openings for when you can drive through it. It was a really interesting experience with the raw rock surrounding driving on railroad tracks. Wittier is a cool little port town with about 150 year round residents. It is the deepest port in anchorage (the screen in the cabin showed 820 ft. deep about 30 ft. off shore) so it was first a naval base. Apparently whenever they had bombing scares from the russians they would load all of their equipment onto trains and pull them into that tunnel to keep it safe. We ate breakfast at this little place called the end of the tunnel cafe it was really good. Called mom and dad as we walked around the dock waiting for the boat. There was a sea lion playing with a flock of seagulls and a bald eagle was sitting on a light post really close by so I got some cool pictures. Got on our nice hundred and something foot boat with heated indoor space on the two levels. They served us lunch on the boat which wasn't to good but it was descent. The ride out was really nice except for the crazy wind and light rain when you went outside, but there were some really cool views, since all the snow was melting each mountain had like 6 or 7 waterfalls on it, really beautiful… everywhere. We passed through a fleet of commercial fishers, learned that only the little boats do the fishing and the big boats that sit in the middle with the big booms are called tenders and are kind of like merchants or middle men. The fisherman catch the fish and immediately sell it to the tender, and the tender sells fuel and food to the fishermen. The local ferry that travels through the sound we were in moved at (45 mph on land) more than twice the speed we could, just thought that was an interesting fact. Through the 5 hours of the cruise we saw some insane glaciers, probably about 10 different glaciers, tons of bald eagles, one of the glaciers was even calving and we were a quarter of a mile away, that was quite an experience. I've never seen anything like it. Plus, that glacier was the most brilliant blue color, was over four hundred feet high at its face, went back three miles through the mountain and had a smaller glacier on either side. The ride back was pretty long and I was super tired from waking up early so i just sat around half awake. When we got back to the house Josh, Bryan, and I went back out to get bryan a phone charger and josh and me a new frisbee because ours is pretty much messed up by the dogs. Ate at the house and edited pics when we got home… iPhone 3G S tomorrow!! I've never waited in line for something on its release date, this will be fun, I sure hope I get one…
