Sunday 11th Oct.A long drive from Hobart to Strahan on the west coast and we didn't set out early enough we should have realized why the coach tours set out at 6.30am on some days.It has been a lovely day weather wise although the temperature was only 14 degrees.First stop was Mt Field Nat.Park and Russell Falls there are several falls in the park and Russall falls is the best and the nearest to the car park. Every time you enter a national park you have to pay park fees and this is very strictly enforced. Also you have to go through the information centre to start the walks. We have found it is best to buy a pass which covers all parks because today we have passed through 3 parks. Anyway the falls were good because of all the rain since we arrived in Tasmania.
Next stop was Tarralean to look at part of a hydro water scheme built in the 30s - 50s. We took lots of photos of big pipes coming down a hillside and read that the water from the Derwent river is used 8 times for electricity and then goes on to provide all the drinking water for Hobart. Now those who are still with me please tell the people who have fallen asleep, gone to put the kettle on or gone to bed that I promise this is the last time I will blog about hydro schemes. Onwards to Derwent Bridge and a place called the wall in the wilderness. Please look it up on the web because it is hard to describe but it is a man who has put up a beautiful wooden building to house a long, tall wall he is carving out of woodStunning is the word that springs to the lips she waxes lyrically.
We have been following the coach tour route and they all stop at Lake Clair which is at the southern end of Cradle Mountain National Park. Not much to say about it really and stopping there put pressure on us to get to Strahan and book in somewhere.Today we kept bumping into the same people because there is only one road and a limited number of things to see. When we got to Strahan they were all there booking into the same place. We are at Strahan Village which is right on the waterfront , very nice but expensive we wouldn't want to pay their summer rates.Tomorrow we are on the Gordon River cruise which is what every one comes to Strahan to do come think of it that is the only thing to do.No I lie there is a steam train journey from Strahan to Queenstown which we haven't investigated yet though why anybody wants to go to Queenstown beats us we passed through it and that was enough. It is a copper mining town and the industry has decimated the area it is barren and they reckon it will take hundreds of years to recover.
