Mon.5th Oct. Long drive over to the East side today. We started out with grey skies and temps. of 12 degrees. First stop was Scotsdale at the forestry commission's eco centre. It's an amazing, strange building which is built to be as eco friendly as possible. The ground floor is a good information centre, shop and café.
Next stop Branksholm which is a very tidy small community which had planted trees after ww1 for each soldier from the area who was killed and like the ones we saw at The Entrance in NSW they had perished and needed to be felled so like the Entrance council they had an artist turn the stumps into statues. Some of the tree was very big and they left some branches on so they have 8-10 figures on them. Each tree has a plaque and the ones of individuals tell you about them and the statues reflect their story i.e. farmer, woodworker etc. The sky was still grey but looked better over the coast so we pressed on to try to get to St. Helens by 4pm. hoping it would give us time to drive the 20ks to the Bay of Fires before the rain came. Binalong Bay is at the southern end of the Bay of Fires which got that name because the first white man to see the coast line saw it had numerous native campsites along it and they had fires. The name applies to the coast line not just one bay. From Binalong you can drive up the coast to the Gardens where the road ends and from there the only way by land is to walk. The 4 day trek is reckoned to be in the top 10 in the world. Unfortunately the rain caught up with us but we hope we got some good photos especially of the red stained rocks and the white sand. On the TV weather forecast it has given snow for Hobart where we should be later this week.
