Fri.9th Oct.Actually it is Saturday morning I was too tired to write anything last night and was fast asleep at 9 o'clock having dozed from about seven. It must be all the walking and climbing steps Tasmania is hilly but anywhere after living in Redcliffe is hilly. We started the day at Cadburys after discovering it was open from 8am. But wished we hadn't bothered it is a con.All the info.says there are tours every half an hour with a guide who has expert knowledge of Cadbury history and chocolate. The reality is you pay $7, which gives you the smallest box of Roses and a couple of snack bars of Diary Milk, you can watch a couple of films and you are supposed to be able to sample the raw ingredients but that seems to be barred to the public.95% of the place is taken with the shops and café.
We set off down the left side of the Houn Valley to the only sheep's cheese factory/outlet in Tasmania for a rather sparse tasting and to buy very expensive cheese. It was lunch time so we turned back to Peppermint Bay to a new modern complex which has a restaurant, shop and conference section and was highly recommended in the guide book. Excellent service, beautiful view while eating, the best oysters Joe has ever had and very good food at affordable prices well worth a visit. We was running out of time by now and cut across to the other side of the valley to visit the wooden boat school at Franklin which is a boat building place on the river where people go for 18 months during which as a group they build a wooden boat which is then sold. You can watch the boat building but not go down onto the floor and talk to the people working although 3 men there at the same time as us did just that but we had been told explicitly ' you are not allowed on the workshop floor"Maybe we look like vandals?Further down the valley is Geeveston where they have wooden figures in the street that's wooden as in carved figures not a comment on the local population. There is a good wood cutting museum in the town hall and a co operative craft place in the town.Beware the bakery/café closes at 3pm.We missed one or two other places to visit including Bruny Island but we hadn't time in 1 day.The weather was a bit warmer and only a light shower or two.
