Sun.4th Oct. The hotel is very nice and a cooked breakfast is a civilized way to start the day.The house was built in 1862 for the mayor of Launceston and has been a private hospital before being completely renovated and turned into a select small hotel where they even put a decanter of port in the lounge for guests to help themselves.Just one snag we shouldn't be here we should be in the motel next door.We had booked over the internet through one of the last minute sites and we are pleading ferryitis(stress and sleep deprivation) for causing us to turn into the wrong car park.We thought the receptionist was confused about the booking form we had printed from the net and there were little things which didn't seem quite right like the size of the place, no internet connection and the inclusive breakfast but we were very happy with the place and when we heard that it had been sold in July and the new owners are Chinese and the young receptionist had only been there 2 weeks we thought that explained some of the strange things We only realized what had happened when we saw the sign for next door as we left this morning and when we got back the receptionist here was waiting for us because they had cottoned on.Joe went next door and was very relieved when they accepted our explanation and waived the cancellation fee. After seeing inside next door Joe gratefully agreed with the suggestion that we stay where we are for the last night.
The day was bright but still a bit cold 17 degrees and we drove up the East side of the Tamar Valley, across the famous Batman bridge (which the engineers amongst you might like to look up) to the west side and Beaconsfield mine and museum which is the gold mining town where in 2006 two miners were trapped underground for 2 weeks.Afterwards went drove about 5k to the platypus House and saw platypus and echidnas two animals you rarely seen in the wild.We went back over the bridge which is stunning even to a non engineer and up to George Town which at 3.30pm was dead not a tea shop in sight.
Because we hadn't had a lunch and no afternoon tea we splashed out on the buffet at the Country Club Tasmania highly recommended if you are ever this way.Ah well time to call the maid to turn down the 4 poster bed and tuck us in for a good nights sleep before we drive over to the east coast and The Bay of Fires.
