Up at 5.30am this morning with Shona and Janine to catch the Kingfisher Bay vehicle ferry to Fraser Island. It was very foggy with visibility around 2.03....
When we got to Fraser when deflated our tyres to 20psi then hit the sand tracks.
First stop was Lake Mackenzie with gorgeous crystal clear water with shades of aqua. We watched the fog lift off over the lake and the sun waking up for the morning.
Next stop Lake Benaroon where we had a lakeside BBQ breakfast of bacon, eggs and mushrooms!
Fraser Island is approximately 15km wide x 121km long and is the only sand island in the world. It's hard to fathom how the rainforest grows purely in the sand, let alone the 42 lakes/estuaries on the island!
After driving through the confusing maze of sand tracks we finally emerged on the Eastern Beach. The weather is perfect to hang out with friends driving up the beach. We all took turns driving and getting a feel for beach driving.
Stopped at Eli creek which was an amazing, picturesque creek with shades of aqua and yucca trees- so inviting!
Lunch was a BBQ on the beach with prawns, chicken, gourmet sausage, coleslaw and more beers. Followed by a visit to the Maheno shipwreck!
Last stop: Lake Wabby, a sandblow with a lake at the base.
Continued back to Kingfisher bay for scones, jam, cream and the ferry back to Hervey Bay.
Very early night as we are all exhausted!
Highlight today: BBQ lunch on the beach with friends.
