Woke Mel up early this morning with a surprise birthday cup cake and her birthday presents. (A pineapple in a steel colander filled with jelly beans ha ha). Happy Birthday!
Had a hot shower at the truck stop -worst shower amenities ever- but the luxury of hot water made it all bearable!
Went to the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival about 64kms inland of Gympie. Nowhere in Australia can you visit a Pumpkin Festival such as this. The entire town was laden with Pumpkins and over 150 country stalls of all varieties.
Peanut stalls, Billy tea and damper stalls (with fresh dampers cooking away on the fires), Bush dance music (with washboards and bottle cap instruments), savory and sweet Pumpkin dishes, fresh farm produce, Jams/Relish's, Cakes and lots of farm animals.
For breakfast we had a slice of fresh, home made Pumpkin Pie (surprisingly nice) and hot espresso coffee.
We selected a pumpkin each (Mel selected a smooth Jap Pumpkin, whilst I went the local Queensland Blue variety pumpkin with a strangely odd shape) and then we registered in the Pumpkin Roll competition.
The Pumpkins are rolled down 'Policemans Hill' (pictured) they must be over 12cm wide and the goal is to land it in a circle about a meter wide (winner gets $1000 cash).
Quite a few pumpkins smashed and splattered (over 700 people registered) and it was an absolute hoot!
Both Mel and I also took part in the Pumpkin Shot-put, and I am the "Australian, Goomeri Pumpkin Shot-put runner up", placing 2nd in the womens with a throw of 10.5meters. So hilarious!!
We savored gorgeous, moist pumpkin scones for lunch, pumpkin chocolate cake and even pumpkin beer!
It was a fantastic fun event and lovely to see the smiles on each persons face as they experienced this unique event, there were well over 15,000 people but it didn't feel crowded!
Highlight today: Pumpkin roll, pumpkin shot-put, mels birthday cake, pumpkin pie, animal farm with the cutie pigs and lambs, pumpkin beer and the atmosphere at the pumpkin festival!
