So today was our first proper day in brissy! The sun was shining and off we headed to the city....
To mine and Katie's delight, although perhaps not Ollie's we passed a clothes store which had a sale rail outside! Kate got me an early birthday pressie in the form of a $7 dress! Great way to start the day!
First stop. Museum of Queensland, learnt a bit about the history of Queensland, one particular thing that interested me was the custom of metermaids. While we were in Surfers paradise we saw some of these, they are basically pretty girls in gold bikinis, I had assumed they were promoting some tanning product buy no......this was something which was started in the 60s, basically these metermaids would walk along the seafront and when they saw that a cars ticket had expired would get them a new ticket at the meter and place it on the car! This still happens today (as we witnessed) brilliant.
After the museum we grabbed some lunch and headed down queens mall and then on to the botanical gardens. Windled away some of the afternoon walking through the gardens and saw an African sausage tree. We also saw few few moreton fig trees, I don't think I've seen one before but basically they grow on top of existing trees an their roots suffocate the original tree eventually leaving hollows between the exposed root (see pic)
Got a ferry down the river and over to southbank parklands, a pretty place to grab a coffee and slowly made our way through and back to the hostel.
A few jugs of snakebite before heading up to bed, early start tomorrow for the Australia zoo!
Over and out
