Well, today is the 18th September, Independence Day. So day off for everyone. Seems the night before Independence Day is bigger than big here, not sure but may even surpass New Years. Will wait and see on that one. Went to party at my school and then some of us decided to go out for Terremotos. Terremoto literally means ´earthquake´ an apt name for a drink that literally leaves you shaking. The best place to drink teremotos is at ´La piojera´ a massive pub where spillage and slopage is all fair game. 2 minutes at the bar and I was covered...
The bar runs all down one side of this massive drinking den and the bartenders line up about 20 glasses at a time and then dollap in the icecream, followed by wine or beer. The crowd shouts out the number they want ie cuatro, cinco etc... then you throw the money at them and pronto! have your drink. One drink is enough to get you on your way, I had 2.
So I´m feeling it a little bit this morning! But is was great, also got into a little bit of chanting.. not really sure what was being said...something patriotic, I´m going with ´Viva Chile´.
It was good meeting other teachers but through talking to them I realised that no one really stays here very long, as the pay is not very good. Everyone I talked to had lost money living here, most only really stay for 4 months max and then they are forced to move on. I said most English teachers from NZ go to Asia and they were like, why didn´t you go there? A question I´m now asking myself a lot! But really its the experience you get here rather than the high salaries, so I´m going for that for at least a few more months.
