Today I went gliding with the Yorkshire Gliding Club. They are about 1 hour drive south of Durham. Kerry and I had stopped in at this gliding club several weeks ago and thought it looked really good, so today i went back to investigate further. The club is renouned for sitting on top of a ridge which is soarable when the wind is from the west. Today there was no wind so we were relying on thermals. I met a young bloke who had been to Ausralia gliding a few years ago so he came up with me in a 2 seater and showed me around the area. The weather was quite tricky to begin with so we were just glad to be staying airborne but after about 20 minutes or so the ground heated up a bit more and we headed off to the west to explore the surroundings. The area is much more hilly than what i am used to. We went for a 90 minute flight exploring the local area - flying to Ripon and York. The countryside is scattered with RAF airfields, some of which are not RAF anymore. Upon landing my instructor buddy cleared me to go flying in their aircraft should i wish to, but i was quite satisfied after my 90 minute flight. I can't wait to go back on a day when the ridge is working. Theres some photos of the flying in the 'England' gallery pics.
Kerry worked at the Irish pub yesterday and today, what a girl!! She has gone full time with the coach company as well, so she's a little trooper.
Last night we went to a local Italian restaurant by the river in Durham and had a feast of Pizza, Pasta, Wine and Ice Cream. After that we went for a walk along the river where we found the local Durham Luminate Festival, a once a year event which involves street bands, parades, fireworks and typical festival type stuff. Giant blimp fish floating up in the air was the highlight for us.
We just booked some airline tickets to duck over to Dublin for the weekend at the end of this month which will be very exciting. Kerry says we need to go to the Guiness brewery while there which seems like a good idea.
We only have about 12 weeks left in the UK before we head off on the second half of our trip. We have just booked an 11 day tour of Egypt (Cairo/Aswan/Pyramids) which we will attend in late Sept. We will add a more detailed itinerary to this site as we firm up our flight details.
