Heath and I have just got back from a day out and we had such a great time I thought I'd share! We've had a pretty full on but good weekend - we managed to pack a lot in! I was supposed to be doing a promotions job for the recruitment agency I got my new job through both days this weekend, plus working at the pub Friday and Saturday night but got a call late Friday arvo letting me know it had been cancelled. I can't say i was particularly upset! I shared the good news with Heath and his face fell - he'd arranged overtime on Saturday because he thought i'd be working so I was going to have Saturday by myself, but the upside was that we now had the whole day on Sunday to do something. I found out on Friday that Heath and I are able to go on any of the day trips the coach company I'm working for organises for free, so we decided we'd take advantage of it and join all the nannas on the Sunday trip to Castle Howard. Mum and Alison had both told me to go visit it (thanks to antique roadshow featuring it!) and we weren't disappointed. The Castle is a bit north of York, bout 2 hours by bus from here. The whole property is around 17,000 acres with the castle and gardens covering around 1000 (I think!) The weather was miserable in Durham as we were leaving, but down in Yorkshire it was fine, if a bit grey. We spent around 4 hours wandering around the bits of the castle open to the public and all the gardens and parkland. I'm not going to try to describe it - the photos say it better than I could! - except to say it was absolutely beautiful and 4 hours probably wasn't quite long enough. The house is jam-packed with antiques and paintings, but my favourite part was the grounds. I'd have loved to see them over the easter weekend when all the daffodils were in full bloom. Because of the warm weather followed by frosts in the morning all the daffodils seem to have shrivelled up by now. The rose gardens were also pretty desolate, but I think when the roses are in bloom it will almost be worth a return trip to see them - that's a pretty big call considering I've never really been into gardens. Maybe my mum is rubbing off onto me :) Either way, we had a really fantastic day. Definitely going to go on as many day trips as we can on the weekends from now on. We've got two long weekends coming up in May (one of them falling on Heath's birthday) and we have big plans of going to either Scotland, Ireland or the lake District to celebrate. I've just found out an old friend is living in Edinburgh so we definitely have to get up there soon!
