Today I went to take a vulture to the vet. I was the only volunteer asked to go so it was a pretty good opportunity.
We had had a white backed vulture with what seemed like an eye infection which we had treated for 4 weeks, then eventually he was euthanized because his condition was worsening and he was not eating and was very lethargic. This morning another white backed vulture was discovered with similar looking eyes. He could not open them. This suggests that the illness is contagious, and it would be a disaster if all the centre's white backed vultures were to fall ill with this and die. The vet sent off blood samples and swabs of the eyes to try and finalist what may be the problem but for now we have antibiotic to treat the obviously ill vulture until we are sure exactly what to do. Very interesting!
