Today was another unconventional day. We had breakfast early again, but me and the other person in my group were both busy doing aviary, so didn't get round to doing our cleaning rounds. So tomorrow will be a nightmare!
After breakfast we went to nhoveni, the private game farm in greater Kruger national park. Leopard traps had been set to catch the leopards to fit them with a tracking collar. However, no leopards had been caught, and the collar would become out of date for use soon, but they had caught a hyena so decided to fit the collar on that instead.
First we went on a game drive, and saw buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, giraffes and impala.
We had to first tranquilize the hyena, then move it out of the trap, fit the collar then put it back in the trap to come round. Then later we came back and released it.
We also released the pangelin that was brought in the other day, and a python we also had. We put the pangelin in a large woven bag in the cab of the vehicle, and when we came to bring it out it was no longer there. We spotted it's tail poking out from under the glove compartment. It had crawled inside the dashboard!! It was very difficult to get it out. Had to remove the glove compartment, then one of the staff had to wrestle it out, as it was very strong. It was very bad, but funny at the same time! Especially now we know it is ok.
When we got back at 4.50pm, we had to go do our feeding rounds. Whilst gutting chicks I heard the squeak of a guinea pig very close. I peered out the window, down the side of the building and saw a baby guinea pig. So me and another student, Sam went to rescue it. It was very cute. I feel rescue is a term to be used loosely, as when she grows up she will be fed to a serval cat or honey badger or something. Still, she gets to live out a little bit of her life! We name her Spirit.
