Today one of the staff, Jan, gave us a talk on conservation. Usually I would find that sort of thing really boring but this was very interesting. It was good to be able to relate all the boring environmental stuff I learned in A level biology to a real life situation. I actually see the point of it all now!
There is a lot more to conservation than I first realized. I think I was a bit naïve in thinking it was a simple solution. There are so many barriers that can make it hard to actually help the animals. I feel I have a much rounded view of it all now.
After dinner, Jan told us that a leopard had been found caught in a snare and Brian (the owner) had gone to asses the situation. There was a possibility we would be able to go and see it. But we would have to wait for news, and it could come as late at 1am. At 12.40 Jan came to tell us that the leopard had been brought back to the rehab centre. So we all got up and helped unload it. It was given antibiotics and it's wounds were treated with antiseptic spray. It had damaged one of it's canines quite badly by struggling whilst being trapped in the snare. We the helped take it to the isolation cage, where it will stay for a while. It was 2am by the time we finished with the leopard, and I had to feed the squirrel at 3am, and felt pretty awake after all the excitement so just sat up and waited to feed her then went to bed after. Then up for rounds at 6.30!
