It was another early morning for us today. We were supposed to be on the bus for Capri by 6:30, but the buses were running a bit late. It was 7:30 when we finally left the hotel and we had a hydrofoil to catch at 10:30. I slept most of the way to Napoli, but I woke up in time to see the traffic we got stuck in. We didn't make it for our 10:30 departure time. However, we were able to get onto the 11:00, which just pushed the rest of day back a little bit.
The hydrofoil was almost a cross between a boat and a plane. The interior is wide like a boat, but the seats are set up like plane seats and it feels a bit like flying with a lot of waves. I got a little seasick, but after about an hour we made it to shore.
Capri is beautiful! It is a stereotypical seaside town; there are boats everywhere, a small beach and little shops and restaurants next to the water. We really wanted to go to the Blue Grotto, a cave that you canoe to, but it is only open when there is no wind and the tide is out. This is because the entrance is so small; you actually have to duck into the boat when you go through and then it opens into a much larger cave.
Instead, we took a boat tour around the island. The shore is covered with cliffs and caves and the water is so blue, it is unbelievable and absolutely breathtaking. Partway through the tour, we were able to stop and swim. The water was a little rough today, but it was the perfect temperature, so we jumped in and floated over the waves. I couldn't believe I was swimming in the Mediterranean. I never wanted to leave!
Eventually we got back on board and headed to shore, where we caught a small bus to go to the top of the hill. It was so full that we had to fold down the extra seats that covered the aisle so everyone could sit. And it was necessary that everyone sat. The road twisted and turned and the other traffic made for some tight corners, but our driver knew what he was doing and we quickly made our way to the top.
There was a short walk down a path lined with flowers and then we arrived at a little shopping area, where we got something to eat. After lunch, Willa, James, Jess and I decided to take the chairlift all the way to the top of the mountain. Each person has his or her own seat for the thirteen-minute ride and the view is spectacular! We walked around the top admiring the scenery and taking pictures and then stopped to get gelato from the cafe - pistachio and stracciatella (chocolate chip) today.
A little while later we took the chairlift back down the mountain and caught the bus to go back to the water. We had about 15 minutes to walk around to some of the shops and then we caught another hydrofoil to Naples. Our seats were on the first floor this time, so I didn't get seasick at all and the ride was much smoother.
The bus ride back to the hotel took a while because we stopped to eat, but we finally got home at midnight and I fell asleep studying for my Italian exam.Top of FormBottom of Form
