I woke up around 5:45 this morning and was at breakfast by 6:15. After breakfast, we got on the bus for a three-hour drive to Pompeii. I slept almost all the way there.
The ruins of Pompeii span an enormous area, so we were only able to cover a small portion of them. We saw some of the homes and businesses, the laundry, the public restroom, where business was conducted (more than one kind of business apparently), and the brothel, which still had the remnants of paintings on the walls that were used as a sort of menu for its clients.
It was all really fascinating, but once again it was hot, we were tired, and we stood around in the sun, so I really just wanted to leave. However, at the end we were able to see the people who had been encapsulated in stone, and it was very moving. The poses they were in were the last movements they made and you could almost see the fear in the lines of their bodies. Just thinking that such a fate could befall a person is a hard concept to grasp.
We had some time to get lunch before we moved on to Sorrento, but it was so hot I didn't want to eat anything. That area is famous for its limoncello, so when stopped inside one of the shops, they gave us a free sample. It was really good. I learned that limoncello was actually invented by accident about a hundred years ago. The lemons grow very well around here and a farmer ended up with too many of them. He didn't want to waste them, so he put them in a barrel on a boat to store them and when he came back they had fermented. After adding a little sugar, it became the famous drink we know today.
While everyone else went to get pizza, Megan and I decided to get gelato. We sat at a table in the shade, talking and eating for about half an hour before we had to meet the rest of our group to get on the bus. They told us all different times to meet, so when a few of us were waiting at 1:30 with no one else around, we got a little worried that the bus had left without us. A few minutes later, we found everyone else inside eating, so we caught the bus with them at 2:00.
The drive to Surriento (Sorrento) was about 45 minutes and once again I slept most of the way. The last leg of our journey was through the winding roads of the mountains overlooking the coast. It was so beautiful! Our group split up - some of us went to the beach and some went to the shops - and I joined Ali, Ashley and Alexa in their shopping. We didn't have much time before we had to get back on the bus, but we found some really interesting shops.
We made it home a little after nine and went for dinner. Everyone is so sick of pizza, but I tried to order a chicken wrap and they didn't have it, so I ended up getting pizza anyway. After dinner we walked back to the hotel and I have homework to do before going to sleep.
