We had the privelege of watching a flat back turtle lay eggs on 80 mile beach. We had last week seen turtle tracks on the beach during the day and realised that we had missed the opportunity of seeing them lay, so Cath was keen to come back after getting our own car back to see 80 mile beach again. It was so totally worth it as the turtle watching was one of life's really special experiences. The flat back is a huge turtle - the shell is one metre long and when they dig the sand sits on their shell hence the name flatback. They are very fussy about the depth of the hole and are careful after each egg is laid to push it in with a flipper before laying the next one. After the turtle we were watching had finished we saw several more coming out of the water to lay and escorted "our" turtle back to the water without lights so as not to disturb here. Really this trip is turning out to be most educational!
