I have less than a month left in South Africa! It's so crazy how fast time goes by. As I have said many times, I have had a lot of ups and downs with my internship (and working in Khayelitsha). As for as being in South Africa goes, I feel like I still have so much more to see and do! This last weekend we actually did quite a bit and hopefully my following weekends will be just as busy.
On Friday we went to Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point and saw the most south western point on the African continent! It was so breathtaking! (I will post pictures) It was almost surreal; being there and looking out into the ocean and knowing that the next piece of land is Antarctica… sometimes I get so caught up in things that I forget I am actually in Africa (as crazy as that sounds). I know I make this experience sound scary, because of the protests and everything, but I have seen so many beautiful things that most people will never see in their lifetime and I feel very fortunate.
On Friday night we went out to Tiger Tiger. Tiger Tiger is a club located in a shopping mall! It sounds really weird but it is actually a really big club and it's always a lot of fun.
On Saturday we woke up and went to the Old Biscuit Mill again. I got a really pretty necklace! It's gold and has a small charm on it of the African continent (so I feel kind of weird wearing it here). After Old Biscuit we took a cab and went straight to Table Mountain. We already had plans to hike Devils Peak (Another beautiful hike on Table Mountain). We got lucky with the weather, it was absolutely beautiful! We weren't feeling our best because of the night before… so it was kind of a rough hike, but the view from the top was worth it. After the hike we decided we needed to reward ourselves, so we went out for dinner. We went to Fat Cactus again, which is where we went after our Table Mountain hike. It was delicious once again!
We didn't go out on Saturday night because we were too tired. I slept for 10 hours on Saturday night and it was amazing!
On Sunday we had plans to go surfing. We went out to breakfast and were on our way to catch the train when we decided it was WAY too cold. We went back to the house and met up with the other girls. We ended up going to the Botanical Gardens and wine tasting. The gardens were gorgeous! Overall this weekend was so beautiful. Between Cape of Good Hope, Devils Peak, and the Gardens.. I saw some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.
We went wine tasting at Groot Constantia; the oldest winery in South Africa! It was great once again. I am learning to really enjoy wine. And it's so cheap! It's about 4 US dollars to go wine tasting here and some places are free. They give very generous portions too!
After wine tasting we went home and had some more wine and cheese and got ready to go out. We had plans to go to this event called Cold Turkey. We heard about it from some locals. They locals described Cold Turkey as an outdoor dubstep baari (electronic music BBQ). It was exactly that! There were probably a couple hundred people there and I think about 6 different DJ's. It was such a random and crazy thing to do on a Sunday night but it was a lot of fun!
As far as work goes, this week has been pretty busy. I will post an internship update soon to get you up to speed on what we are working on, so stay tuned!
