Yesterday we secured our first school for the 5 cent project! I am really happy because now I can say I have contributed something to Empilweni. We are going back to the school on Thursday to give them the change container and talk about when we will come each month to pick up the donations, etc. Remember, this fundraiser is essentially a penny drive. You would think that it would be really easy to get schools on board but it hasn't been! I'm really happy we have at least one now and I am hoping that we will secure many more before I leave.
As far as safety goes in Khayelitsha, everything is still pretty crazy. Mrs. Duma said some things to me yesterday that made me feel REALLY uneasy, so today I am going to talk with VAC about my concerns. I definitely want to finish out my internship at Empilweni but I also don't want to put myself at risk for injury... or worse. It's surreal to be working in such an intense political climate where my safety could be at risk. I understand also that culturally issues are at play here and I'm not sure who I should really be listening to. Mrs. Duma says it's not safe for me to come to work, but VAC still sends us to work. Hopefully when I go to the VAC office today, we will figure everything out.
Tomorrow I am going to a workshop in Stellenbosch. The workshop is with the company GivenGain and is about raising money using social media websites. I am hoping I will learn a lot and be able to contribute more to Empilweni by what I learn.
I will keep you all posted on everything, so stay tuned!
