(If you haven't already, go read about where I am interning! http://www.empilweni.org/) The first week of my internship at Empilweni has come to an end. So far it has been a great experience, but I still have a long way to go. I am starting to realize how difficult it is going to be for me to connect with not only the clients but also the staff. Everyone speaks xhosa in the township where I am working, so during the therapy sessions the clients obviously speak xhosa as well. I had the opportunity to observe an assessment of a potential new client today. The social worker would fill me in on what the conversation was about every once in a while but it was still difficult for me to follow. At this point, it seems that it might not be possible for me to have very much one on one contact with clients. Empilweni really does do amazing things and I am so happy to be a part of it. My only hope is that I can find my place in the organization so I can make a difference too. I have spoken with many other interns and they all have similar stories. They say their internships started out slow but eventually turned out great. I am hopeful that will be the case for me also!
