I cannot believe it… only three days left of work at Empilweni and four days left in Cape Town! The past 3 months have flown by! I am starting to get really eager to go home. I have met so many people that I am going to miss dearly but I am ready to get back into a normal routine. I wish I could live in the moment more because I think I am not appreciating these last few days as much as I should, but I just cannot wait to see my family and friends!
This last weekend was awesome! We went to Hermanus. We left Cape Town Friday afternoon and got to Gansbaai (a town near Hermanus) at about 4:30pm. We stayed at a backpackers (which is the same as a hostel) in Gansbaai on Friday night. It was right on the water and the weather was beautiful. We watched the sunset, had a delicious braai (BBQ) that the backpacker's staff prepared for us, and enjoyed the rest of the night. It wasn't too crazy of a night because we had to get up at 5:30am on Saturday to go shark cage diving!
When we got to the shark cage diving office it was a little past 6am on Saturday. They fed us breakfast, and then we got on the boat and headed out into the ocean! We really didn't go very far out and by the number of sharks we saw, that terrifies me! If I would have gone shark cage diving before I went surfing, I do not think I would actually have wanted to go surfing. Five people got into the cage at a time and they were in for about 15 minutes. It doesn't seem like a lot of time but it was definitely enough. The sharks swam right up close to the cage and the largest one was probably 15 feet long! I recommend shark cage diving to anyone! It was a lot of fun and I felt completely safe. It is definitely something I will never forget.
After shark cage diving we went back to the office where they fed us a small lunch. We then headed to a nearby brewery, where we spent the next FIVE hours sitting outside. We tasted 6 different beers and 5 different wines. Eventually we had another lunch. It was a beautiful day so it was nice just relaxing outside and enjoying the sunshine.
On Saturday night we stayed at a backpackers in Hermanus. We hung out for a bit, and then split off into groups to go get some dinner. After dinner we all met up and headed into town to go to a club. Hermanus is a really small beach town, so I use the term "club" loosely. It was a lot of fun though! I was exhausted by the end of the day because we got up at 5:30 that morning.
On Sunday we took our time getting up, had breakfast, and headed back to Cape Town. Overall, it was a great last weekend in South Africa!
So tuned for a post later this week that wraps up the end of my internship!
