Last Wednesday I attended a training with my supervisor and another volunteer. The training was presented by the company givengain and was about how to use social media websites to fundraise. It was a great experience! I feel like I learned a lot that I will take home with me and use in my future career, as well as use during the time I have left at Empilweni. Today my supervisor, the other volunteer and myself, met again to talk about what we learned and brainstormed ideas for how we can use what we learned to help Empilweni. Our meeting lasted the whole day! We talked a lot about a big fundraising campaign that we hope to start. I will obviously only be here for the beginning of the process because I am leaving soon but I think it is going to be a great learning experience. As of my, my duties are to restructure our givengain profile page so it will be ready when we start the fundraising campaign. There are a lot of aspects to the campaign but it is essentially the 5 Cent Project but on a much bigger level.
I am still going to schools and talking about the 5 cent project also. We now have 2 schools completely on board and we have 4 more appointments this week to talk with other schools. My goal is to have at least 5 by the time I leave and I am pretty confident that that will happen.
Along with fundraising, my supervisor asked me to organize the documents folder in one of the office computers. This task alone could take me a month…. It is a complete mess!
Between all of this, I think I will be more than busy for the next three weeks. Just a reminder, my last day of my internship is on September 12th and I fly home on September 18th. It will be nice to have some time at the end to get all of my touristy things in that I didn't have time for before. If I have any money left, I am going to try to go on a little road trip down the South African coast (the Garden Route) with some other interns.
Stay tuned for more soon!
