Today is the beginning of week 4. It is absolutely crazy to think I have been here for almost a month. Today at work, I mainly worked on the fund-raiser I am establishing. What I plan to do is get local schools to partner with Empilweni by helping us with the "5 Cent Project." The 5 cent rand coin is pretty much the same as our penny. It is kind of pointless but a bunch of them can add up into a large amount of money. The 5 Cent Project is basically what we know of as a penny drive. I plan to talk with schools in Khayelitsha and other surrounding townships. I also plan to talk with a few schools in the neighborhood I am living in. The idea is that the schools will essentially adopt Empilweni and allow us to continue to stay in service.
This past weekend was great! We went wine tasting on Friday, to the Manchester United, South Africa Ajax soccer game in the world cup stadium on Saturday, and out for a great sushi dinner on Sunday! Overall it was a very enjoyable weekend but the soccer game was definitely my favorite. On the way to the game we did the fan walk. It rained most of the day and a couple times it was pretty much like a monsoon! That didn't stop us from having fun though. The majority of us actually didn't have tickets so we bought them from guys outside the gate. They were just a little more expensive but our seats were pretty good so that was fine. Once we got in the stadium we got a few beers and found our seats. During the opening of the game, the whole crowd sang Nelson Mandela happy birthday. I was told that it was the world record for the most people singing happy birthday to someone! So that was pretty cool to be a part of. The game was a lot of fun to watch and the final score was 1 to 1. After the game we walked to Neighborhood, a favorite restaurant/bar of ours on Long Street downtown. We had dinner then went home to get ready. We already had plans to go see a concert that evening at Assembly, another bar downtown. The band playing was very alternative and everyone there was dressed hipster. It was different than any other bar or club we have been to so I am happy we went!
On Sunday we slept in. We were all pretty tired from the night before. After we gained enough energy, we eventually went out and had sushi. The restaurant we went to is half off on Sundays! I'm not a big sushi fan but it was delicious! I had a great high end meal, plus a drink for basically 9 US dollars. It's nice because food is so much cheaper here, so I am able to eat out a lot.
I am looking forward to the next week because the weather is finally decent! Hopefully we will be able to do a lot of outdoor stuff this weekend! Stay tuned
