THERE COULD BE TROUBLE AHEAD - you know the tune......
Got this today from a journalist friend in London:
MADAGASCAR RISKS "HUMANITARIAN DISASTER" FROM LOCUST PLAGUE: An estimated 2.3 million people are at risk of a massive locust invasion
in rural Madagascar, reports U.N. news service IRIN. Farming
communities already struggling to feed their families are likely to be
badly affected unless the invasion is stopped. The best method is to
spray pesticides across vast areas - 500,000 hectares - before the
locusts have fully matured. But to do this, the funds and equipment
have to be mobilised before large areas become cut off by the rainy
season, says the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The
rainy season runs from October to April. FAO says the build-up of
locusts has gone undetected until recently because the government's
Locust Control Centre has been hit by the country's political turmoil
that began when the current president seized power in a coup in March
2009.
Could have been put out by the opposition I reckon.
