Lunch stop at last on day 1. 32 miles down and about 18 to go. It's blooming hilly in Cornwall. But the sun is shining and we've had good weather so far.
Met an old friend on the route this morning. Scotty and his daughter came to wave us on and it was so nice to see a friendly face. Well, other than Tom's!
And we've had our first "misunderstanding" ;-) I went one way at a junction, up a rather steep hill. Tom followed then met a local who said he was going the wrong way! Like he'd know!!! So I got to a T-junction (natural pause and catch up point) and waited and waited and assumed he'd been splattered all over the road and went back in search. No sign. Humph. Called twice. No answer so I turned and re-traced my steps and headed to the next village. There he was having taken the alternative route and just assumed he'd lost me. No harm done, but we both learned a lesson on communication and did an extra 4 miles of hills. Nice. Good thing today is a short day.
It's been hard so far. Cornwall is really hilly and there's no escaping it. That makes every mile ten times harder than in London. But it's utterly gorgeous. I'll publish today's photos tonight.
Time for a note from the big man himself:
Tom: "Beware strangers offering 'helpful' advice. He'd been on the ride from Lands End to John O'Groats before. He had the same bike as me. He was very clear that I was going miles out of my way. What a nice man. However.... Cornwall roads are beautiful. In a landrover. King Harry's Ferry shouldn't be missed by anyone in this part of the world. Most impressive thing you'll ever do for fifty pence! The bike is running well and I'd particularly like to thank Condor Cycles for their fully priced "help". Let's just leave it at that! Dark clouds of fear loom large in the shape of Dartmoor tomorrow. Highly athletic, stick thin, psychotic types are adamant about the awfulness of tomorrows ride. One such loony informed us that you have to cycle up 14,000ft of roads in one day. Captain Oats: "we may be some time". "
More later!
